A man convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in an alley in the southern Philippines has been sentenced to life in prison, the prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.
Francisco Garcia Ponce, 53, who had been on trial since October for raping a woman he met at a bar, was convicted by a court in the capital Manila on Tuesday of rape and sodomy.
The woman had been walking with Garcia Pone and a friend near a bar in the upscale Pasig City neighborhood when they noticed that the two men had stopped and began talking to each other, the court said in a statement.
The two men got into an argument, and Garcia Pones then pulled his pants down and raped the woman, who was crying, it said.
Afterward, the men fled the scene, the statement said.
Garcia Ponce was convicted of rape, sodomy and aggravated sexual assault and will be sentenced on July 23.
He was convicted after the woman testified against him at the trial.
